A Look into: Good Night, and Good luck.

By:Ashley Williams

In the Movie Good Night, And Good luck situated in the era of the 1950’s and when television was still fairly new and the beginning era of broadcast Journalism “Good Night, And Good Luck” chronicles the conflict between television newsman Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy.

Murrow’s desire was to report the facts and enlighten the public with his dedicated staff headed by his producer Fred, who was also his friend in the CBS newsroom. They defied corporate and sponsorship pressures, to examine the lies scare and intimidating tactics used by McCarthy during his communist ‘witch-hunts’ or discoveries. Going against the grain they continued with their stories with the objective being to inform the public.

A very public feud developed when the Senator responded by accusing the anchor of being a communist because of his reporting of the stories. In the climate of fear and reprisal the CBS crew carries on and their tenacity will prove historic and monumental. This marked a very important part in television history because it allowed the media their right to report to the public even with the fear of repercussions Murrow decided to do what he felt was right and expose the government once again in history.
