In 1954 the Guatemalan government received military gear from Czechoslovakia causing the U.S. ambassador to say, “Unless the Communist influences in Guatemala were counter acted, Guatemala would within six months fall completely under Communist control. The United States was prepared to prevent Guatemala from becoming a communist country.

Although President Jacobo Arbenz Guzman did recognize Communism as a valid party, Guatemala did not have any known Communist in a cabinet position.

In order to put an end to Arbenz Guzman, the CIA designed “Operation El Diablo”.

As a result of this operation, Arbenz accused the United States of messing with Guatemala’s internal affairs. Guatemala then turned to the Soviet Union for weapons.

On June 18, 1954 Colonel Carlos Castillo led 150 into Guatemala, backed by 500 supporters and American pilots. By June 27 Arbenz had fled Guatemala and his government had been overthrown.
